Some of the best linemen hand protection

Ask any experienced lineman some of their best advice on selecting gear and they will likely start by telling you to get a good pair of gloves.

In all temperatures and settings, a good pair of lineman gloves is a must. The longevity of our careers as lineman is our body. We must protect ourselves and ensure we can show up on the job day in and day out. This starts with a good pair of gloves.

What are arc rated gloves?

Arc flash gloves work gloves are relevant for any worker who is potentially exposed to an electric arc generating a heat flux of greater than 2 cal/cm2. They also make sense for workers in less extreme environments who may face hazards such as sparks or flames. Part of being arc rated means that the gloves will NOT Drip, Melt or Ignite when exposed to these hazards.

At Youngstown Glove Co., the team works hard to achieve higher arc levels due to the thickness and quality of the hides we use. Additionally, the patterns and thread also enhance the performance in the third party arc tests.

Anyone with exposure to electrical hazards must have arc rated PPE available, as mandated by OSHA. The standard test method for determining arc ratings of hand protective products for electrical arc flash protection is ASTM F2675.

Specialized laboratories are required for arc testing due to the extreme nature of arc flash events.

What makes a good lineman glove?

Youngstown Glove Company goes through an exhaustive development process for every glove they bring to market.

The team performs numerous field tests and laboratory tests to ensure we are producing gloves that not only meet certain safety specifications but that are also comfortable, durable and dexterous.

There is a real balancing act that must occur in the pattern making and material selection to meet the multifaceted needs of our customers.

ASTM D6413 is the Standard Test Method for Flame Resistance of Textiles – AKA – ‘Vertical Flame Test’.

This is the defining test method for compliance with OSHA 1910.269. The purpose of this test is to determine whether a fabric will continue to burn after the source of ignition (flame) is removed as well as to determine if dripping or melting occurs.
