All-American Class of 2024

Linemen Institute of the North East

Donald Leiching went through childhood not knowing what he wanted to do in life. When he began to struggle in high school, he went into the military and received training as a lineman. After four years in an apprenticeship, Don became a journeyman. He moved to Seattle and started his journeyman career there on the west coast. After working in Seattle, he traveled around the country and worked at various power companies. Don learned that if you don't mind working hard, you can have a very successful career and life being a lineman. He loved the brotherhood that he created with the people he worked with, and also the relationships he made with the people in the communities. His best time working as a lineman was when on storm, when you have to go out there and get the lights back on for people. It is something he took so much pride in. He started to realize throughout his career, that there are 2-3 storms a year in the country where line-workers are sent on storm duty for weeks away to help get the lights back on. It was then that he realized lineman training schools are so essential and he decided to open his own. They had no training schools in the North East, so Don opened up a training school in Saugerties, NY, later moving to Kingston, NY. Don believes in small structured classes with 1-1 training so that the future lineman have the proper knowledge of safety and are well equipped to enter the field of being a lineman. Don lives a great life and gives all the credit to his career of being a lineman and now he wants to give that gift to so many other young individuals.
