Step 01. Pay
The Substation Technician – EM posting on the Lineman Central job board (August 2026) did not list a wage. City line and substation titles are union-scale (IBEW Local 9 on recent bulletins). Confirm the live figure on the career-center posting, not a third-party scrape.
Step 02. Apprentice
Journeyman Line Electrician openings have asked for a completed apprenticeship, about a year as a JL, ALBAT or comparable, and an Illinois CDL. Substation Technician – EM asks for substation construction or maintenance time, post-high-school electrical training, and a CDL, plus a skills test. This is a municipal electric department, not ComEd.

12–34 kV overhead and underground, hot-stick and rubber goods, switching, substations (transformers, breakers, bus, relays), underground in manholes. Capital work and day-to-day reliability for a fast-growing western suburb. Local 9: verify the current agreement with the hall.
