Hiring for
Municipal utility · before you apply
Knoxville Utilities Board hires linemen in Knoxville, Tennessee. The line job is the Lineworker Apprentice program. Utility Apprentice is a different job.
Step 01. Pay
KUB sets lineworker apprentice pay by step under its IBEW agreement. Lineman Central does not print a dollar figure on this page. Public board numbers from 2023 are already old. Confirm the current scale with the hall before you count on it.
Step 02. Apprentice
KUB has run a line apprenticeship since the 1980s. The IBEW agreement goes back to the 1940s. Five steps to journeyman. KUB sends apprentices to line school. Since 2022 that school is Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Oneida.
Finishing that school does not make you a journeyman. You still work the steps on KUB's system.
Utility Apprentice is the other program. It is for people with little or no utility experience. It feeds meters, plants, maintenance, and other crafts. It is not the line apprenticeship.
Step 03. Journeyman
Journeymen at KUB work KUB's own electric system around Knoxville. This is a municipal utility. It is not a contractor crew working for other companies.
Step 04. Hiring
KUB hires the apprentice, then puts them through the steps. A high school diploma and a driver's license are the floor on the Utility Apprentice side. Lineworker openings can ask for more. Read the posting that is actually open.
